Are you ready to be guided on an exciting journey through stories, faces and memories that have made this Ligurian village unique? We invite you to participate in the free guided tour "Spotorno as it was: stories, faces and memories," a tour designed for those who want to discover - or rediscover - the authentic soul of Spotorno, among famous people, historical events and local traditions.
Faces
Pope Pius VII: In February 1814, Pope Pius VII stopped in Spotorno during his return trip from Savona to Rome. This extraordinary event is still alive in the memory of the community and represents a fundamental page of our local history.
D.H. Lawrence: The English writer stayed in Spotorno between 1925 and 1926, together with his wife Frieda. Here he found inspiration for his works and left an indelible mark, remembered by a plaque on Lawrence Street.
Camillo Sbarbaro: A poet and aphorist, Sbarbaro chose Spotorno as his home from 1951 until his death in 1967. Our land was a source of inspiration and study for him, especially his passion for botany.
Memories
The furnaces and the port. In the nineteenth century, Spotorno was renowned for its lime quarries and kilns, an activity that deeply marked the local economy and landscape. Even today, the place name "Furnaces" and the traces on the hills tell of this important page in our industrial history.
The port of Spotorno has been a focal point for maritime traffic in the Tyrrhenian Sea for centuries. Ships were built here and local products were exported, making the village a crossroads of cultures and trade.
The stories
The Transylvania Tragedy: On May 4, 1917, the British liner Transylvania was torpedoed off Capo Vado, near Spotorno. The local community distinguished itself for its courage and solidarity in the rescue effort, taking in the survivors and leaving an indelible mark in the collective memory.
