Principality of Monaco - Urban trekking

Principality of Monaco - urban trekking

An experience of urban trekking in the Principality of Monaco allows you to explore, on foot, an extraordinary territory where elegance, history and landscapes meet in less than 2 km². The route connects the Jardin Exotique, the striking Rock of Monaco, the Port Hercule and the iconic neighborhood of Monte Carlo, with an original harbor crossing aboard the Bateau Bus, ecological shuttle on the sea.

The route starts from the scenic Jardin Exotique, suspended sheer above the cliff. The garden houses one of the world's largest botanical collections of succulent plants from arid climates such as Africa, South America and the Arabian Peninsula.

Also located within it is the striking Grotte de l'Observatoire, limestone cave rich in stalactites and stalagmites, which can only be visited with a guide.

After visiting the botanical garden, the route continues downhill to the neighborhood of Fontvieille, through stairs and pedestrian streets surrounded by greenery. This is the most modern area of the Principality, built on the sea front with sustainability criteria.

Points of interest along the way:

  • Parc Princesse Antoinette (optional stop, with centuries-old olive groves and children's games)

  • Princess Grace Rose Garden, dedicated to the memory of Grace Kelly, with more than 300 varieties of roses

  • Museum of Naval History, with models of historic ships and unique pieces related to seafaring tradition

From the Fontvieille neighborhood, a short climb or a comfortable free public elevator leads to the Rock of Monaco (Monaco-Ville), the historic heart of the Principality. This medieval quarter holds the main historic buildings and is the identity hub of the Monegasque monarchy.

Places to visit in Monaco-Ville:

  • Palais Princier de Monaco: with the striking changing of the guard 11:55 a.m.

  • Munich Cathedral, the burial place of Princes, including Princess Grace

  • Oceanographic Museum, founded by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, with aquariums and marine collections.

Possibility of lunch in local bistros, especially long Rue Comte Félix Gastaldi

Descending from the fortress we come to the famous Port Hercule, bustling with yachts and racing boats. From here it is possible to cross the harbor thanks to the Bateau Bus, an electric and sustainable shuttle that connects the two sides of the harbor in minutes.

Docking on the opposite side of the harbor, you enter Monaco's most famous and photographed neighborhood: Monte Carlo. An international symbol of luxury, elegance and worldliness, it is home to Belle Époque buildings, historic hotels and the famous Casino Square.
