Cogoleto and Sciarborasca: Among Kilns, Forests, and Views of the Sea

An extraordinary loop trail that combines the sea, history, and nature, taking us on a journey to discover the hinterland of Cogoleto and the quaint village of Sciarborasca, at the foot of Mount Beigua.

The tour begins in the historic center of Cogoleto, where you can admire the house that, according to tradition, was the birthplace of Christopher Columbus—a site visited over the centuries by travelers and distinguished figures from all over the world.

An ancient village of fishermen and lime producers, Cogoleto’s history has been intertwined for centuries with the kilns that also supplied the major construction sites of the Republic of Genoa. The lime produced here even contributed to the construction of the Palazzo Ducale. After a long period of industrial development, the town has successfully reinvented itself, highlighting its natural and cultural heritage. Today it is a renowned tourist destination, overlooking one of Liguria’s most beautiful waterfronts and connected to the famous bike and pedestrian path linking Varazze, Cogoleto, and Arenzano.

Leaving the sea behind us, we’ll venture along trails nestled in the fragrant Mediterranean scrub, reaching the village of Beuca with its characteristic “Dutch Village.” We’ll then continue on to Pratozanino, home to the former psychiatric hospital—a place that gave rise to the curious place names “Sentiero dei Matti” (Path of the Mad) and “Sentiero degli Infermieri” (Path of the Nurses).

The trail will eventually lead us to Sciarborasca, a small village nestled between the greenery of Beigua Park and the blue of the sea. In the past, it served as an important crossroads for the transport of timber destined for the shipyards along the Riviera. Here we’ll have the chance to visit the Casa Contadina, a small ethnographic museum that houses tools, artifacts, and artifacts from rural Ligurian life.

The return trip to Cogoleto follows a picturesque route through tuff outcrops, monumental trees, and the Rumaro Stream, offering splendid panoramic views of the Gulf of Genoa and the Riviera di Ponente.

At the end of the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the historic Fornace Bianchi, a true symbol of Cogoleto’s industrial heritage, which is now preserved by the Fornace Bianchi Association, whose members passionately share its history and connection to the local area.
