Ancient Salt Roads Trekking
Borghetto Santo Spirito - Monte Piccaro
A fascinating panoramic trek among the sea and Mediterranean scrub to discover Mount Piccaro, a relief that dominates Borghetto Santo Spirito and has been a natural checkpoint on the ancient communication routes of the Riviera di Ponente for centuries.
The itinerary starts from the coastal village of Borghetto Santo Spirito and travels along ancient paths that quickly enter the green hills behind. The route passes through pine forests, holm oak woods and stretches of Mediterranean scrub, offering continuous panoramic views of the Ligurian coast, from the Albenga plain to Cape Noli and Cape Mele. On clearer days the view opens to the sea and Gallinara Island.
Along the way we will encounter the striking Borelli Castle, a 19th-century neo-Gothic construction nestled in the green slopes of the mountain. The complex, with its turrets and scenic walls, represents one of the most characteristic architectural elements of the area.
The trail then continues to the scenic little chapel of Madonna della Guardia, a small place of devotion much loved by the villagers, located just below the summit of Mount Piccaro. From here there is an extraordinary view of the entire western Ligurian coast.
Walking along these ancient routes, one understands the strategic importance that the coastal highlands had over the centuries for the control of the territory and trade routes between the coast and the hinterland. The trek thus offers an experience that combines nature, local history and Mediterranean landscapes in one of the most striking corners of the Riviera di Ponente.
