Ancient Salt Roads trek: Ortovero - Vendone walking among impressive sculptures
A fascinating loop trek exploring the Arroscia Valley, one of the most important wine-growing areas in Liguria, where rural landscape, ancient agricultural traditions and contemporary art meet in a setting of extraordinary beauty.
The excursion starts from Ortovero, a village nestled among the vineyards, fruit trees and crops that characterize this fertile inland area of Liguria. Here some of the region's most renowned wines are born, such as Pigato, Vermentino and Ormeasco DOC, authentic expressions of an agricultural culture that has shaped the landscape for centuries.
Walking along ancient connecting roads and scenic paths, we will reach the striking Baroque oratory of San Giovanni and, past the village of Villa, arrive at the fortified village of Pogli, where numerous towers are still visible, bearing witness to the valley's medieval past and the strategic importance of these ancient communication routes.
Entering the territory of Vendone, the landscape is enriched by an unexpected and surprising presence: in the locality of Castellaro we will encounter the monumental sculptures of Reiner Kriester, a German artist who created a veritable open-air museum here. The large white-pink stems, decorated with geometric symbols and stylized faces, emerge from the landscape like mysterious archaic presences, creating an evocative dialogue between contemporary art and nature.
The return to Ortovero will be through cultivated fields, olive groves and vineyards that still tell the agricultural history of the Arroscia Valley and the deep connection between man and land.
