Palmaria Island

A unique island, which in just 2 square kilometers encompasses a multiplicity of different environments. Together with the islands of Tino and Tinetto it makes up the La Spezia archipelago. The three islands rise south of Portovenere, hiding it and protecting it from the view of those arriving from the sea. Separating Palmaria, the largest, from Portovenere is only a very narrow arm of the sea, guarded by the ’ancient church of San Pietro.

The island, which from a distance appears to be one with the tower houses of the stunning fishing village, holds an important natural heritage protected by the Porto Venere Regional Nature Park. The eastern side, gentle and with lush vegetation, contrasts with the western side that features steep, overhanging limestone cliffs and numerous caves that open up to the open sea. A loop trail will allow us to discover it in its entirety.
