FINALESE: Sea view trekking. Borgio and Verezzi

It is said that Saracen pirates fell in love with this place and abandoned their trade and retired to live here. This explains the Saracen origin of Borgio Verezzi, One of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
During the ’excursion our environmental hiking guide invites you to discover the incredible beauty of this landscape given by an incredible variety of natural environments, characterized by particular geological, botanical and faunal aspects, but also by the presence of important historical-architectural emergencies that denote the millennial presence of man in the area.
Our excursion starts from Borgio and after a brief visit to the historic center, characterized by typical carruggi and the scenic St. Peter's square with the church of the same name, we move eastward. We cross a beautiful residential area overlooking the sea and immediately after the town we find the ’beginning of the nature trail. We immediately immerse ourselves in the scents of Mediterranean scrub among euphorbias, broom, thyme and lavender. The area is rich in numerous quarries from which Verezzi stone was extracted in ancient times. From the Mediterranean scrub we pass to a dense holm oak forest at the end of which we find ourselves in front of the church of San Martino and the Sanctuary of Maria Regina Mundi. From here we can still climb the high edge of an ancient cliff behind the village to reach the viewpoint. We are at the highest point of the trail (285 m asl). The panorama is majestic: the eye sweeps as far as the’Gallinara Island and to the headland of Cape Apple.

After a short descent among beautiful terraces overlooking the sea we reach Verezzi. Here time seems to stand still. We are entering a quiet village, where no cars pass through the stone-paved streets. On the dry stone walls we admire the bushes of Campanula Isophylla, an endemic species, exclusive to the Finale area. Heart of the village is Piazza di S. Agostino, a balcony overlooking the sea. This is where an event of great appeal to all of Liguria and beyond has been held since 1967: the Borgio Verezzi Theater Festival. We continue to Roccaro and then on rock outcrops descend the arid slope entirely covered by “fasces” with olive and carob trees. We continue to descend to the Caves of Valdemino, better known as the Caves of Borgio Verezzi. A visit here is a must; these are the “most colorful caves in Italy” thanks to the presence of different minerals that dye the concretions different colors. The route inside the Borgio Verezzi Caves winds for about 800 meters inside large halls, among huge blocks detached from the vault in remote eras. Very rich concretions of all shapes: from slender cannulae to wide drapes, large columns to bizarre stalactites.
An incredible itinerary that in just a few kilometers will take you not only inside a wide variety of environments, but will tell you about the presence of man from prehistory to the present day.
