FINALESE: Historical trek: The Queen's Road from Finalborgo to Perti.
One of the greatest engineering works of the time, it was built in record time, in only three weeks, and still bears the name of the engineer who designed it and supervised the work: Gaspare Beretta, one of the leading military engineers who worked for Spain in Lombardy, Piedmont, and Liguria. Such a feat could only be accomplished for an important event: in fact, the Infanta Margarita of Spain would pass through here in 1666 to marry Duke Leopold of Austria.
A real superhighway, the first carriageway of the time, which even allowed two carriages to cross!
We walk a stretch of it from Finalborgo a Perti to see some of the most important evidence of the Final Both as a family stronghold Del Carretto both as an important Spanish outpost.
Starting from Finalborgo, we cross the arch erected in honor of the passage of the Infanta of Spain and pass in front of the Court Palace where the regal maiden rested after her arrival from Spain. Crossing the square, we take the beautiful cobbled mule track that climbs to Castel San Giovanni, built by Spain in the 17th century, and reaches the ruins of Gavone Castle with the well-preserved tower of diamonds, a symbol of marquis power. We arrived at the locality Tall Perti characterized by a handful of houses and many churches, including the Church of St. Eusebius and the beautiful Our Lady of Loreto Church, better known, as the Church of the Five Bell Towers, one of the most prestigious examples of Renaissance architecture in Liguria. The church denotes the importance of the family Del Carretto in the 16th century.
Along the way on the low walls and rocks it is easy to glimpse the campanula isophylla, a true endemism of Finale. We return to Finalborgo with a nice loop tour that through a path through the olive and citrus planted belts overlooking the Aquila Valley reminds us of the presence in this area of George Gallesio, an important politician and botanist, born in Finalborgo and buried in the church of Santa Croce in Florence among the great men of his time. In short, the Via Romana takes us back to the center of the village.
