NOLI. Overlooking the sea: Pilgrim's Path with a stop at the Falsari Cave
The Pilgrim's Path is one of the most picturesque routes in Western Liguria, completely sea-view that crosses the promontory of Cape Noli.
This is an interesting route because of the variety of landscapes and historical traces present. In a short walk we pass from Mediterranean scrub to woods and our gaze is always rewarded by beautiful views of the sea and the steep cliffs, where the peregrine falcon nests. The Cetacean Sanctuary lies just below us, and with a little luck you may even catch a glimpse of some dolphins in the bay of Varigotti.
History and nature are closely connected in this itinerary that winds along ancient roads and terracing, evidence of man's hard work in this part of the peninsula, where in order to cultivate and be able to survive, the land had to be wrested from the mountains. It is heroic agriculture that characterizes this little corner of paradise and was introduced around the year 1000 by Benedictine monks.
The remains of Genoese watchtowers, Romanesque churches, and the ancient Lazaretto that we encounter along the way bear witness to centuries past.
Along the way, you cannot miss a short but challenging detour to the Cave of the Forgers, one of the most photographed places in western Liguria-a magnificent balcony overlooking the sea.
Our treks are also an opportunity to learn more about local history and culture, so at the beginning and end of this beautiful walk our guide will take you on an interesting tour of Varigotti, one of the most beautiful villages in western Liguria, characterized by the’Saracen architecture Of its houses abutting the beach while Noli is an opportunity to learn about the fascinating history of this ancient republic, always loyal but never subservient to Genoa, where illustrious men including Dante Alighieri, who mentioned Noli itself in Canto IV of Purgatory, passed through.
A route therefore of great naturalistic value but with interesting historical aspects that cannot be missed during a visit in the Western Liguria.
