Sestri Levante, in the province of Genoa, is known for the beauty of the two bays with poetic names: “of Fables” so christened by Hans Cristian Andersen in 1833 and “of Silence“. Come and discover its beauty in the company of one of our tour guide! Between the two bays is the Basilica of St. Mary of Nazareth, with inside precious paintings by Genoese painters and a wooden Pieta by Anton Maria Maragliano. Sestri Levante stands on a thin isthmus that joins the mainland to the rocky promontory known as “the island.” On the promontory is the Marconi Tower, now converted into a hotel, where the Nobel Prize-winning scientist for Physics used to carry out radio-transmission experiments. The romantic atmosphere is accentuated after sunset, with the lights of the houses reflecting on the sea.
In Roman times it is attested by the name Segesta Tigulliorum or Segeste and became an important trading center, especially for maritime traffic; in fact, the nearby road connections with the Bracco Pass and the Velva Hill allowed a considerable exchange of raw materials with the hinterland.
La Rizzi Gallery is housed in an elegant palace that was once the residence of the family of the same name, which was responsible for making usable a rich private collection of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and furnishings from the 15th to the 18th century.
A walk through downtown Sestri Levante is also an opportunity to store in stores and craft workshops that have been open for more than 50 years and still retain original furnishings and signs
Sestri Levante is in an excellent location for visiting both The Cinque Terre either Portofino and nearby locations, such as Camogli and San Fruttuoso.
