Via the path that, according to tradition, inspired Dante in the conception of Purgatory, we will reach the summit of Mount Ursino (120 m a.s.l.) and enter the scenic ruins of the castle. In the 10th - 11th centuries, to defend themselves from Saracen raids, the few inhabitants abandoned the late Roman-era settlement, built near the sea and lacking defenses, and retreated to Mount Ursino (incastellamento). Traces of the ancient dwellings still remain, protected by the walls and the castle wanted by the Del Carretto marquises. From up there there is a splendid view of the historic center (built from the 12th century onward) and the Ligurian coast. On clear days it is possible to see Corsica and the Apuan Alps.
