Varigotti, beloved and celebrated by poets, writers and VIPs, is known for the magnificent Saracen Bay and for the old village, with colorful Arab-Moorish houses overlooking the beach; here it is not difficult to run into celebrities from show business or culture who choose Varigotti as their “buen retiro” to spend the summer. A path that climbs among olive groves and Mediterranean scrub allows you to reach the ancient church of St. Lawrence overhanging the sea. The church has a single nave with a square apse lit by single-lancet windows and a newer part (the wall facing the sea) on which two Gothic-style doors open.
The toponym of Varigotti that has always been considered difficult to interpret can be framed in the pre-Latin Ligurian linguistic area, identifying it as a name composed of a widespread root uara, indicating a “wet place” or more simply “deep water,” and cottis, in its original meaning of “rock”: an interpretation that fits very well with the orographic features of the site.
On Varigotti Promontory (also known as Punta Crena), from which there is a beautiful view, a large number of fragments of cylindrical amphorae dated mainly between the 6th and 7th centuries is attested, an expression of a close connection with production centers to be found in Tunisia and the North African provinces.
In the hills behind Varigotti, rural culture, history and nature come together in a landscape of almost untouched beauty. The landscape is dotted with small villages, such as Pino, Chien, Ca'dei Mori.
One of the most enchanting trails in the Finale area is the Pilgrim's Path, which connects Varigotti and Noli, with breathtaking views overlooking the sea, intense scents and traces of an ancient past.
