Albisola with one s or with two ss?
This is a question you are sure to ask us during our guided tours.
There are three localities historically called Albisola: Albisola Superiore, Albisola Capo and Albissola Marina. They are currently divided into two municipalities: Albissola Marina - the only one written with ss - and Albisola Superiore. What unites the 3 Albisolas is the important tradition of the ceramics.
Albissola Marina, defined by Marinetti “Free Republic of the Arts” was and is a major center of production of ceramics and a place of choice for international avant-garde artists. Today Albissola Marina presents itself as a true open-air museum. Artists such as. Lucius Fountain, Aligi Sassu, Agenore Fabbri, Asger Jorn, Wifredo Lam traced an unforgettable historical moment in Albissolese history, whose echoes still influence and stimulate the town's intense cultural life today.
Albissola retains numerous figulini workshops and ancient kilns. The Parish Church of Our Lady of Concord houses inside an altarpiece (1576) in majolica tiles with vivid polychromy.
Along the sea, the Artist's Walk (1963) is made entirely of ceramic tiles.
From here you can continue to Albisola Superiore, where the Manlio Trucco Ceramics Museum allows for a fascinating journey through the history of Albisola pottery. In Albisola, ceramic production has catered to every need, from folk pottery, to fine majolica for the upper classes, to beautiful apothecary vessels in the Blue-white or antique Savona style.
